Reading, Reading and More Reading

My favourite genres of books are: graphic novels, fantasy, historical fiction and a little bit of mystery . I like fantasy because it makes me feel like I’m in a different land, I like graphic novels because they have lots of pictures and don’t take me very long to read, I enjoy reading historical fiction like The War that Saved my Life because I like to read about the war times ( I find it very interesting ), I only like mystery a little bit because I only enjoy some mystery books. One series of mystery books I enjoy reading is A Series of Unfortunate Events.

One book I recommend is Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, which is in the fantasy genre and when you read it, you feel like you are really there. In the first book, an 11 year old boy named Harry finds out that he is a Wizard! And was invited to go to a magical school called Hogwarts and meets 2 friends Ron and Hermione. Ron has lots of siblings and always gets his siblings hand-me-downs. Hermione knows every answer in all the tests, but she is a Muggle which means that none of her family are magical. And they go on adventures together. I recommend this book because I think it is a great book for all different types of readers, especially people who enjoy fantasy books.

The book chat I am reading at the moment is called Raymie Nightgale. Two days ago, Raymie Clarke’s Farther ran away with a dental hygienist. But Raymie has a plan. If she can win the Little Miss Central Florida Tire then her father will see her picture in the paper and hopefully come home. But first Raymie must do good deeds and Learn how to twirl a baton. I don’t know if I like this book yet. So I have to keep reading to find out. This is a photo of the book

Nativity

You are the most blessed of all women and blessed is the child you will bear. For as soon as I heard your greeting my own child within me jumped in gladness.” Exclaimed Elizabeth to her cousin Mary.

This term we have been learning about the nativity. When we had enough knowledge about the nativity we started to write a script for 1 of the 12 scenes ( I wrote scene 11). After the we had to audition for the characters we wanted. I got Elizabeth who is Mary’s pregnant cousin she goes to for advice, and a singing angel. We practice in class every 1 or 2 days. After doing a lot of practice we did a dress rehearsal in front of all the other Year 4s. Then on Monday we preformed in front of some of the Nursing Home Residences, which was very exciting. We had to use a microphone because some of the Residents had low hearing. The today ( Tuesday) we preformed in front of our parents and one of the Year 2 classes.

A challenge throughout the process was remembering to get all my props ready before I went on stage. I worked to over come it by always checking I have everything ready, and sometimes when I forget I get little handy reminds form people in my class.

If you were in the nativity what character would you want to be, and why?

Beneath Our Feet

This term we have been looking at a subject called beneath our feet. Which includes researching landforms and natural disasters.                                                                               I researched and wrote my information report on Tsunamis, which is a massive wave bigger then any normal wave.

This is my Tsunami report.

We ended the unit by creating dioramas to show our understanding and shared them with our Year 2 buddies. Here  is a image of my diorama:

Whilst I was creating my diorama I enjoyed glueing the sand on and making the little house.

What type of natural disaster would most like to research and why?

GRA

This year our class has been participating in the GRA, GRA stands for the global read aloud. The global read aloud is where classes all around the world read the book. We can a chapter we have be up to at the end of each week. This years book is Front Desk by Kelly Yang. It is based on her life when first moved to America from China. The book is about a 10 year old girl called Mia who came to  America for a better, but then trouble with getting jobs and work.

For our Literacy task this week we had to invent our own plan of alerting the immigrants when Mr Yao is around. Here is my work:

Weathering, Erosion, Deposition

In Intergrated we have been learning about weathering, erosion and deposition.

Weathering is when wind or water has broken something down ( e.g. rock ).           Erosion is where wind or water takes it away. Deposition is where it dumps it.

We went for a walk around our school and found these examples:

  1. When it rains the water collects the leaves, then the water and leaves flow down to the gutter.
  2. Then when the gutter over flows it runs down the side of the road to the footpath/grass.
  3. The it runs down the grass, and makes the grass over flow which  leads to the grass dying.

What examples of weathering, erosion and deposition can you see when you go on a walk?

Story Graphs

Planning your writing helps you to know what you’re doing when you are writing your story.

A story graph is one way to do this.

I read the story ‘Daddy Lost His Head’ and plotted the events on the story graph. Have a look below:

This is my story graph.

Can you think of an alternate exciting ending for this book?

Scientists Expo

Roll up, roll up, come to my stall to see my experiment!”

On Monday 9th this week we had Meet the Scientists. Meet the Scientists is we’re our parents come to see our experiment we performed by our selfs we had a group/partner we perform our experiment with. My group was Me ( Isla ), Lizzie and Gabby ( who was away ).

We had a trial Meet the Scientists where 4D and 4HB ( the other year four classes ) came around and we presented what we were going to do for the parents.

When the parents arrived every one was so excited but a little bit nervous. The first person came to my stall was my Mum she was really fun to explain our experiment to her.

This is my Mum who is watching my trailer.

How we presented was letting the parents watch the then showing the keynote and explaining it the whole way through. You can see my groups trailer on my blog post called ‘Meet the Scientists’ and my keynote in the comments.

Have you ever conducted your own experiment?

CBCA Amazing Nonfiction

In Library this Term we have been judging the CBCA nonfiction shortlisted books.

Every Library session we read two of the books, then had to fill in a sheet and score the visuals, layout and information out of 10 then had to write why we gave the book that score.

We also learnt what makes a great nonfiction book for example: detailed information, clear easy to read writing and clear/detailed photos or drawings.

This is my sheet!

My favourite book was Sorry Day by Coral Vas’s and Dub Leffler because it had amazing illustrations. The illustrations were amazing because they showed so much emotion because they used brighter colours for the happier times and darker colours for the sadder times. I also like how it was two stories in one.
